Australian Study Focuses on High Heel Injuries

High heel foot problemsA study that was held in Victoria, Australia focused on high heel-related injuries, finding that these type of injuries occur most often during the summer. Additionally, Melbourne podiatrist Cylie Williams found Sunday mornings specifically to be especially common in reports of these injuries. Interestingly, Sunday mornings are also the busiest time for Victorian emergency departments to see these cases.

People between the ages of 20-24 were the most reported age frequency for high heel based injuries. Victorian hospitals have treated 236 women and 4 men for these injuries, a relatively significant number. Dr. Williams says that grassy areas and cobblestone laneways are unsafe for those wearing high heels. Dr. Williams also suggests going no higher than seven centimeters in terms of choosing a heel size for shoes. According to the Australasian Podiatry Council, high heels should only be worn in moderation, with lower and solid heels a safer pick over stilettos.

If you suffered an injury while wearing high heels, seek out podiatrist Dr. Bryant Tarr of Sudbury & Westford Podiatry. Dr. Tarr can treat your injuries while making a suggestion on choosing better footwear.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because they are associated with femininity.  Despite their appeal, they can cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

What parts my body will be affected by high heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – may shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – they decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  Also, the vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What kinds of foot problems can develop from wearing high heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How can I still wear high heels and maintain foot health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.
