Maintaining Proper Foot Care for Seniors

Maintaining Proper Foot Care for Seniors

1.jpgAs many adults age they begin to entertain the possibility of living a longer and healthier life. When it comes to overall health, however, many older adults take for granted the importance of foot health and proper foot care. Mobility issues in the elderly often stem from foot injury, neglect, and disease, making the need to maintain proper foot care in the older adult especially necessary.

Habitually cleaning and examining the feet for irregularities or changes is the first step the older adult can take to maintain proper foot care and foot health. Using mild soaps followed by lotion will help keep the skin from cracking, itching, and drying out. To help prevent the formation of a fungal infection, make sure that the feet are kept relatively dry. Keeping the feet warm will ensure good circulation, and keeping toenails properly trimmed can help prevent problems such as ingrown toenails and toe pain.

Maintaining proper foot care and foot health can be easy for older adults. To learn other methods, see Dr. Bryant A. Tarr, D.P.M. of Sudbury & Westford Podiatry. Dr. Tarrwill attend to all of yourfoot and ankle needs.

The Elderly and their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet, and can hide many life threating medical conditions.

Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.

Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:

-Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe

-Shoes that don’t fit properly

-Pressure sores

-Loss of circulation in legs & feet

-Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.
