Pedicures May Increase Risk for Toenail Fungus

Description: http://ww3.hdnux.com/photos/20/46/34/4351778/0/385x218.jpgHaving a pedicure performed is a comforting activity that refreshes the feet for many people. However, research shows that pedicures may not be as beneficial or even hygienic; including the possibility of causing unsanitary foot problems such toenail fungus.

According to Kim Kyle Morgan of Chron, customers with conditions like diabetes or a weak immune system can put themselves at risk when dealing with the procedures done to their feet during a basic pedicure. "Fungus can get caught up in the motor of whirlpool basins, releasing it again every time the motor revs up,” said Esther Jonas, a podiatrist at Kelsey-Seabold, "The ones without the whirlpool effect are much safer, and adding a disposable liner offers double protection".

There may be steps to avoid getting fungal toenails, but not step guarantees that this condition will never be a problem.  If you are suffering from fungal toenails you should seek the care of a podiatrist such as Dr. Bryant Tarr of Sudbury & Westford Podiatry. Dr. Tarr will evaluate your condition and provide appropriate treatment options for your feet.

Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a problem which affects many people and is hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating toenail fungus.

Antibiotics & Treatments

Lamisil – is the most commonly effective treatment for toenail fungus. It is available as an antibiotic Terbinafine tablet and cream. Terbinafine is a chemical component which kills fungal growth on the body.  Applying regular doses will gradually kill the fungal growth. It is important to keep the area clean and air free.

Talcum powder – applying powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well
