Football Quarterback John Skelton Suffers Low Ankle Sprain

During the fourth quarter in a game where the Cardinals were losing to Seattle, quarterback John Skelton injured his ankle and had to be carted off the field. According to blogger Josh Katzowitz, it was a scary moment where no one knew if Skelton’s injury could end his season. Although the injury seemed devastating, Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Skelton suffered a low ankle sprain. The coach concluded that this injury is better than a high ankle sprain or fractured ankle.

It is unsure whether or not Skelton will be a starter when he returns, but Whisenhunt added: “I can’t look into the future and say what’s going to happen six weeks from now. We will have to see what happens with John and how quickly he recovers.”  While ankle sprains like Skelton’s can be daunting, they can be treated with proper care. If you do suffer an ankle injury, or are experiencing ankle pain you think might be related to an ankle sprain, you should see a podiatrist immediately. Podiatrists, like Dr. Bryant Tarr of Sudbury & Westford Podiatry, can examine your injury and recommend appropriate treatment options.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Happen?

This type of injury takes place when the ligaments are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured; however, even the simple act of walking may cause a sprain. If footing is lost or you are walking on uneven terrain, ankle damage may occur.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin, depending on severity

Is there a Way to Care for my Ankle at Home?

Self-care for ankle sprains includes propping the ankle up and keeping it elevated, applying ice packs as needed, and remaining off your feet. Some may also find that wrapping the ankle with an ACE bandage and taking over-the-counter pain relievers are helpful. One of the most important things is to avoid further stress to the affected area.

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits can aid in prevention

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast, which will allow you to walk while stabilizing the ankle.  However, if the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered a previous sprain, you may want to consider additional support, such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
