Over Fifty Percent of Americans Struggle With Foot Pain

Runners' FeetThe American Podiatric Medical Association conducted a poll with surprising results. In fact, 51% of Americans say that foot pain interferes with daily activities, which include but is not limited to; walking, working, and exercising. The survey suggested that neglect is to blame for much of the foot pain. Since only 25% of the respondents reported that they pay careful attention to the health of their feet, this claim could very well be true.

Scott Douglas of Runner’s World magazine advises people to start choosing daily footwear the way they choose running shoes, with comfort and support as the principal concerns.  Normal footwear is worn much more frequently than athletic footwear, but often values style over maintaining healthy feet.

When working on your feet, you need to be comfortable. If your daily activities are causing foot or ankle pain, see podiatrist Dr. Bryant A. Tarr, D.P.M. of Sudbury & Westford Podiatry. Dr. Tarr will discuss possible solutions and devise a treatment plan that is right for you.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – choosing this shoe places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – our feet were not designed to be enclosed for hours, or all day. Allow yourself to expose your feet.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and stretches is beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – stretching the foot out flat on the floor, will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

Keep your feet healthy and your body will thank you for it.
