Russell Okung Recovers from Foot Surgery

Russell Okung Recovers from Foot Surgery

russel.pngSeattle Seahawks Russell Okung, had surgery to fix a toe injury he sustained last season. Okung hoped he could dodge surgery, but he spotted in a walking boot while attending a spring practice at Oklahoma State. The tackle has been resting during the offseason to give his foot time to recover.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll stated that Okung has been doing workouts in the offseason as he recovers from the offseason. “Russell will be fine, and it’s just something we had to do when the season was over,” Carroll said. “He had a few things, so we’ve taken care of it. We know we’ll have him back for training camp. Maybe a little sooner than that.”In the meantime, Alvin Bailey will take over Okung’s position as left tackle.

Sometimes athletes need to undergo surgery to get back into the game.  If your foot or ankle is injured, consult podiatrist Dr. Bryant A. Tarr, D.P.M. of Sudbury & Westford Podiatry. Dr. Tarr can treat your podiatric needs.

When Surgery is Necessary

Foot and ankle surgery are reserved in cases when less invasive procedures and treatments do not help with the problem.  Although surgery is generally considered to be a last resort, when undertaken it can provide a permanent pain relief than before and allows you to resume the activities your foot problem has prevented you from enjoying otherwise. This includes:

  • Foot deformities (bunions, bone spurs)
  • Painful nerves
  • Congenital deformities
  • Misaligned bones

The type of surgery you will undergo is dependent on the problem at hand. For painful bunions, you may undergo a bunionectomy. Surgical fusions can help realign bones while nerve removal can help get rid of painful nerves and the tissues that surround them.  With advancing, evolving technology and surgical techniques becoming more sophisticated, many procedures are now being performed with small incisions and more precise instruments, allowing for faster recovery times.
