During a game against the Minnesota Wild, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival lost his balance while skating backward and broke his ankle. According to a statement from the Blackhawks through Dr. Michael Terry, Rozsival suffered a fractured left ankle. The defenseman will require surgery to repair it and is not expected to return to full hockey activity until next season.

Broken Ankles

The ankle consists of three bones- the tibia, the fibula, and the talus. The tibia and the fibula are the two bones that connect to your knees. They sit directly above the talus bone, which is protected by a fibrous membrane and allows slight movement in the ankle joint. A break usually occurs in one of these bones after the foot is twisted too far, a strong impact like jumping from a great height, or repeated stresses like running.

Diagnosis

If you suffer an ankle injury, it is essential that you receive a correct diagnosis. One of the first signs that the ankle is broken is an inability to put any weight on it. There will often be severe bruising and swelling at the sight of the injury. Your doctor may also order an x-ray be taken to determine the exact location and extent of the injury.

To fight and raise awareness for arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability, the Arthritis Foundation is holding their 2015 Walk to Cure Arthritis at Montrose Beach. The walk does not only set an example for raising awareness, but for exercising to help manage arthritis. The CDC recommends two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week; this can include brisk walking, cycling, swimming, gardening, or dancing. After a busy Christmas and New Year’s out and about, the feet are often left sore and run down. A Korean worker with the last name Yoon was recently awarded a state subsidy by a Seoul court for a nerve condition he sustained while working on a waste pipe at a Samsung semiconductor plant in 2012. He wasn’t wearing protective equipment at the time, so his hands and feet were exposed to hydrofluoric acid in the liquid waste he was handling.

Afterward the nerves in Yoon’s extremities stopped functioning correctly, so he applied for welfare from the government. However, his case was originally rejected because his limbs looked fine on the outside. He appealed his claim to the Seoul Administrative Court, which acknowledged the fact that hydrofluoric acid often causes nerve damage and ruled in his favor.

Nerve Disorders of the Foot and Ankle

There are two nerve disorders of the foot and ankle called Interdigital Neuroma and Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. These conditions affect the hands as well, and are caused by stress and genetics. People who suffer from Interdigital Neuroma and Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome are prone to serious pain and inflammation in the area.

Pain that is associated with Interdigital Neuroma is often from local inflammation in the nerves in the front of the foot. Symptoms include pain, burning, and/or tingling sensations of the toes.

There are several steps a doctor will take to determine if one has Neuroma such as: radiographs, MRIs, and bone scans. Surgery is not required in many instances, and should only be considered when the patient is suffering from persistent pain.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that is less common than Interdigital Neuroma. It only seems to affect patients who have severe ankle pain which begins in the bottom of the foot extending all the way to the calf.  In other instances one may encounter partial numbness and atrophy if the cases are extreme.

Schools in Richmond, Virginia celebrated International Walk to School Day on October 8th by encouraging students to walk to school. To celebrate the benefits of exercise children, parents, and school teachers were invited to participate in the day’s activities, which included showing students safe walking routes to school and the importance of pedestrian safety. The promotion of physical health and activity was a theme of the day’s various events. In addition to participating in International Walk to School Day, Linwood Holton Elementary hosted a Mini-Wellness Fair that encouraged children to follow healthy lifestyles.

Exercise for Your Feet

If you spend most of your time on your feet, or don’t either way your feet should deserve attention. There are many people who exercise regularly and still don’t spend enough time to care for their feet. Your foot does get exposure that requires maintenance since your health has a lot to do with footing.

Exercises

Toe rise – this exercise involves standing on the tip-toes for a count of 15 seconds, then resting your feet on ground. This exercise should be repeated three times a day to strengthen the feet.

Toe Pick-ups – the toes are exercises that are done by picking up small items using your toes. This helps strengthen the muscles on the upper part of the feet. Three sets along with 15 seconds being held should be completed. Small items like marbles or stationary will work.

Ankle Pump – can be performed upwards or downwards. The workout can be completed both ways at the same time. This involves flexing the foot either towards the shin or to the ground. This makes the foot work very well, working large parts of the muscles.
